Report on the activities of the Lazio Regional Mesothelioma Register 2012

The Mesothelioma Register of the Lazio Region collects all cases, even suspected ones, of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura,

of the peritoneum, the pericardium and of the tunica vaginalis of the testis, related to inhabitants of the Lazio Region, with the aim to estimate the incidence of the disease and to assess the consistency of possible occupational exposures to asbestos.

The results of the Mesothelioma Register of the Lazio Region are presented through the sixth annual report of the Regional Operative Centre (COR) Lazio relating to the cases of malignant mesothelioma (MM) recorded from January 1, 2001 to October 30, 2012. During this period in the Mesothelioma  Register of the Lazio Region 791 cases of MM were taken into consideration.

The highest  frequency of MM occurred in 2011 with 81 cases (10%), the lowest in 2001 with 51 cases (6%). The incidence of MM of the pleura in the Lazio Region in the period from 2001 to 2011 was equal to 1.94 per 100,000 inhabitants among men and 0.63 per 100,000 inhabitants among women. During the last years the COR has identified various working environments where there have been cases of malignant mesothelioma and that are currently the subject of epidemiological surveillance in order to assess the state of health of the selected populations  and, in particular, the frequency of asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer.
