The DEP has always been engaged in the study of the effects on health of air pollution and pollution caused by traffic, through the use of time series studies and the development of new methodologies.

In particular, the DEP is involved in the development of a system for monitoring environmental characteristics (individual pollutants and meteorological data) and in the production of guidelines for the interpretation of scientific research on air pollution.
